Introduction:

Dynamic English Conversation Instruction

**Dear SkimaTalk Students and Friends,

This August, I will be starting a new, full-time job. As a result, after 08/10/2018 I will not be available as often here on SkimaTalk. Thank you for all of your support, encouragement, and friendship over the past two years. I hope that we have the chance to meet again soon.**

Hi, there! My name is Gwyneth. You can call me Gwyn. Here is a little information about me! I hope that we can get to know each other soon :-)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
I have 5 years of experience teaching English to students of all ages in Japan. I worked in public elementary schools and junior high schools for 4 years in Toyama Prefecture. I also tutored junior high school and adult students privately for 1 year in Tokyo. As of July 2018, I have been tutoring on SkimaTalk for 2 years. Starting in August 2018, I will be working as a 5th grade teacher at a public elementary school in the U.S., teaching Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

EDUCATION:
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian Studies from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA. I spent my junior year studying abroad at International Christian University in Tokyo. In May 2018, I completed my Master's degree in Elementary Education at Old Dominion University in Virginia.

SKIMATALK TEACHING STYLE:
Each one of my SkimaTalk lessons is a little bit different. Why? Because I believe in student-centered teaching. This means that the student should be setting goals and doing most of the talking. That being said, I tend to plan structured English Conversation lessons that are centered around a focused discussion topic. I try to get to know students during our first lessons together. Then, I pick discussion topics, short articles, and podcasts/video clips to use during our lessons that might interest each student. I send two or three options to the student either prior to our lesson via SkimaTalk message or I share them with the student at the beginning of the lesson.

Teaching Specialty:

Topics › News Articles

I like to use news articles with students who would like to work on their pronunciation skills and learn new vocabulary. Here are some of the websites that I use: Beginners - www.breakingnewsenglish.com; Intermediate/Advanced - www.mashable.com, www.huffingtonpost.com, and www.bbc.com. I also use news articles for listening exercises.

Kids › All Ages

When teaching young children, I like to incorporate fun and engaging games, quizzes, and more! I also try to provide young learners with strategies for reading, listening, and speaking in English. Here are some activities that I have used in lessons recently: What's this? Animal Quiz, Password (Q&A game), and Information Gap (to practice prepositions of place).

Everyday English › Free Conversation

I love to meet new people and learn about how they see the world! During our conversation, I will be sure to correct your grammar (both verbally and in the Skype chatbox), suggest more natural vocabulary and expressions, and give you feedback on your pronunciation. You don't need to worry about preparing a conversation topic! I am prepared with a wide variety of topics. Here are some topics I have used in lessons recently: company culture, personalities, healthy lifestyles, and discrimination.

Writing › Essay Writing

I believe that writing is one of my personal strengths. As a graduate student, I have ample experience with academic writing. During writing lessons, I utilize the Skype chatbox and Google Docs to help you compose and edit essays. I will assist you with structure, grammar, word choice, and more!
