Introduction:

International exam preparation and pre-departure speaking, reading and writing skills development

MY GOAL IS TO HELP YOU DEVELOP as both (1) an English user, and (2) an effective learner who can take initiative for your own learning over the long-term.

MY TEACHING FOCUS
I specialize on IELTS Preparation sessions, and love to see students achieve their dream of getting a scholarship and moving abroad. I have extensive IELTS teaching experience at an official test center location in Indonesia and have taught IELTS to both Australian and New Zealand government funded scholarship recipients so that they can qualify for their provisional scholarships and study for graduate degrees abroad.

ABOUT ME:
I have a Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL) and have given 60+ talks and lectures throughout Indonesia over the past 5 years, as an English Language Fellow funded by the US State Department, focusing on teaching methodology. I recently (March 2019) conducted a webinar for the US State Department on effective grammar teaching, which had over 100,000 participants in 69 countries. Before my work at a non-profit language foundation, and my US-government funded lecturer work, I also worked as the Director of Studies of a private language school.

MY ONLINE TEACHING METHODOLOGY
I know that students preparing for the IELTS are highly motivated and I believe in maximizing every minute of a session. This means that I work from before the lesson begins, as students submit their assignments outside of session time, and I return detailed feedback after the sessions are over. I search the internet to find the best resources that students can use for self-study to improve the areas that we identify in our sessions together.

FIRST STEP IN STUDYING:
If you read this profile and would like to study with me, send me a message introducing yourself and explaining your goals and language learning background.

IELTS PREPARATION WITH SPENSER:
OPTION A: I am happy to have Straightforward IELTS test simulation and feedback (25 minute sessions)
OPTION B: IELTS test simulation and feedback + 2nd additional lesson with tips, strategies, key vocabulary, extra practice, and guidance for future self-study (50 minute session)

*In addition to the IELTS Speaking and IELTS Writing courses, I can also conduct sessions on IELTS Listening and Reading. The focus of these lessons is on developing particular skills, and being aware of some of the common mistakes that test-takers often make on these sections.

Teaching Specialty:

Test Prep › IELTS

I work with a large collection of resources that target the four skills individually. I give personalized advice and coaching to help with each section of the test. I help learners develop their skills in each area as well as their overall knowledge of and ability to use grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. More details about my IELTS teaching are included in the profile description above.

Test Prep › TOEFL

Full official practice tests from Educational Testing System. I also work to help students develop their reading, listening, writing, speaking, grammar and vocabulary that will help them be successful on the test. I work with a student's current goals and ability to make a long term plan for passing the test.

Writing › Essay Writing

I help students by giving extensive revisions and comments for essays. This could be a shorter essay assignment as in IELTS or TOEFL style writing, or it could be a longer academic essay in the style that will be needed for study abroad. Topics covered include sentence types, paragraph structure, outlining, paraphrasing, style and repetition, editing, logical clarity of ideas, and how to write different sections of a research paper, depending in which area students need to improve. Those lessons could be for tutoring and writing help on longer existing projects (those who are writing some kind of thesis in English), or for those who want to learn how to write in a Western academic style for future study.
