I specialize in teaching English Conversation, Grammar, Business English, & Presentation Skills.
Hi, my name is Ralph Davis. I'm from Toronto, Canada, but I currently live in Tokyo, Japan.
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama in Education, from Concordia University in Montreal, and diplomas in Small Business Development and Paralegal. I also held licenses in the financial services industry.
I lived and taught English in Japan, in learning centers, and on corporate premises from 2006 to 2013. Returning to Canada from mid-2013 to early 2016, I continued teaching students in Japan online. And I continue to do so since my return to Tokyo.
Because of my broad range of experiences, I can often bring direct knowledge to the learning experience.
I love helping my students increase their listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. So if your goal is to increase your fluency in English, in a fun and relaxed way, I can help you do so.

Teaching Specialty:
I have experience coaching students in preparation for taking the IELTS. I am quite familiar with the process. I can help you approach your test with less anxiety, devise strategy, and increase accuracy and test scores.
I have experience helping students prepare for TOEIC tests. I can help you devise strategies for clearing up confusion around questions, approach your tests with less anxiety, and improve your accuracy and test scores.
I can help you prepare for your TOEFL test by showing you how to analyze test questions, devise a strategy, reduce your anxiety, and increase your accuracy.
Using my theatre and legal experiences, I can help my students prepare and practice presentations, keeping in mind their target audience, appropriate language, vocal quality, and body language.
As a former paralegal, I have had to investigate, research, and organize information in a logical way to support or refute arguments in legal and business forums. I can bring that experience to this course.
I am very interested in current affairs, so if a student wants to have Free Conversation, I am likely to be aware of a broad range of topics that I can suggest for conversation. We can also have conversation on topics the student suggests, while finding teachable moments throughout.
I have a broad range of experiences, so I can draw on those experiences to help my students improve in every skill area, and can customize the lessons to their interests.
With my knowledge of Business English, and Legal English, I can help the student organize their writing and choose the correct vocabulary for maximum intended impact. I enjoy helping students determine their writing goals and then helping them craft language that is relevant to their audience.
I am quite familiar with the structure of the English language, and will use many support materials that I have at my disposal. They range from full texts to online resources.
I draw on my varied experiences in teaching, performing arts, business, legal and financial services, traveling, and cross cultural experiences, along with the student's area of interests, to help guide and inform interesting and stimulating conversations that the student can enjoy and learn from at the same time.
