Introduction:

I specialize in teaching spoken and written English for various purposes

Hi there! I am Calvin, and I am a native English speaker and teacher who was born in Canada, then raised in Hong Kong throughout different international schools. My entire education, save for a few language classes were all in English, hence it is my native language. I then went to the U.S. for university where I combined History, Chinese and Japanese into one unique major under the Interdisciplinary Studies title. After graduation, I taught English at a vocational school in China for impoverished youth, where I also taught topics related to Chinese culture. Upon finishing that job, I returned to Canada to obtain a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL). For my graduation internship, I taught an English Pre-Course at a university in South Korea. I then taught at a high school in the said country, where I led classes in English Reading and Writing and Foreign Culture. Additionally, I have also worked at a language cafe in Busan, South Korea, where I taught varying Korean adults English through conversation.

I believe in forging strong, amiable relationships with students, as I believe it is so key in deciding whether or not productive teaching and learning will take place. If the students feel positively about the teacher, they will be all the more willing to learn, making the teacher a lot more enthusiastic about teaching. I strive for that kind of relationship with my students.

I hope to help improve your language skills, as well as get to know you soon!

My own English knowledge gained from almost three decades of speaking it! Here, we will have a regular conversation about anything and everything, in English!

Everyday English › Situational Conversation

English Basics › Vocabulary / Useful Phrases

My own knowledge of English, as well as dialogs which can be found online, as well as a textbook called 'Speaking for Everyday Life 2'. We can have a free conversation or practice a dialog, then go through any new vocabulary we encounter.

English Basics › Pronunciation / Phonics

My own knowledge of English, and I have done some training in the haptic way of teaching pronunciation. There is also a book called 'The Art of Teaching Speaking', as well as 'Applied Phonology' which I can use. Here, we will do different pronunciation drills, as well as have conversations so that I know what pronunciation issues to help solve.

English Basics › General

I have been using English for almost my entire life. I have also recently taken grammar courses on Coursera to help me explain why certain grammar items are used in differing situations. We will go over phrases to use, meanings of words and how to use grammar.
