Introduction:

Oxford English accent and vocabulary

My name is Chloe and I'm from Oxford, UK. I currently live in London and have been teaching English for 10 years. In 2014 I moved to Tbilisi, Georgia where I taught both children and adults privately (both in-person and online) before moving to Berlin, Germany. I started teaching online privately almost immediately as both I and my students found it suited our schedules more, so am familiar and confident with the structure and ensuring effective communication with my students.

As I have a standard English accent, students often ask me to focus on improving their pronunciation as well as specific vocabulary for their needs. When teaching children, I like to combine image with sound to engage them in the lesson so they look forward to the lesson and find it exciting to learn, rather than a chore.

Teaching Specialty:

Writing › General

I have a range of experience with writing also, and I do include it as one of my hobbies. I am aware of how tone and application can affect text and how there can be a lot of miscommunication issues because of this. Most of my writing experience is business-related texts, like white papers and marketing materials.

Kids › All Ages

As mentioned previously, I have experience teaching both adults and children both online and in-person. The method of teaching changes dramatically when teaching children as well as when approaching different ages of children also. For me, the most important thing when teaching children is to ensure they are engaged with the lesson and excited to speak with me. As soon as they gain confidence, communicating will come naturally for them and they will use the language in a very practical way. I am very patient with children and think we have a lot to learn from them also, so I let them try to correct themselves without rushing them. However, at the same time I will keep note of any struggles they may have to then tailor the lessons to their needs more and more as time progresses.

Business English Basics › General

Business English is a wide area which can vary a lot depending on the students' personal situation. Learning subject-specific vocabulary is one aspect, but also encouraging students to discuss matters in detail and with ease is something possibly more influential. If the student is confident in professional situations, the impact of what they say and how they communicate will be much more important for them. I think cultural differences can have a huge influence on this, especially as we live in a global world, and I like to see when I've helped students in a very practical way rather than just from textbooks.

English Basics › Pronunciation / Phonics

I am from Oxford, UK so I speak with a very clear, Standard English accent. This is usually the most common thing students ask me to help them with so I am familiar with what hurdles many students may face as well as ways to overcome them and gain confidence simultaneously. I have enough knowledge and experience of teaching (both adults and children) to be aware of how to help and tailor lessons specifically to that student. I find most older students struggle with confidence or pronunciation so require more dialogue about challenging but engaging subjects, whereas children often require something more visual or audible to find their lessons fun and motivating. My range of experience with students from all over the world means that I can adapt easily to match their requirements. This also includes when students want to learn more colloquial English, or situational, which could vary a lot between cultures as well as language.
