Introduction:

I specialize in developing fluency and confidence in a variety of speaking situations.

After I received my MAT in English as a Second Language, I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of students in a variety of situations. My career took me to many countries: Colombia, Malaysia, The United Arab Emirates, Japan, Oman, Turkey and Mexico, plus teaching many international people in the United States. Last year I began on-line teaching, actually telephone English, with students in South Korea. Most of my work was in English for Academic Purposes where I taught listening, speaking, reading, and writing to students of all levels. Sometimes grammar was a separate subject. If not, it was always included.

I like online classes for many of the reasons I think you do.....I can teach at the time and place I want to. More importantly, online teaching gives me the opportunity to know my students better and thus prepare classes that are at the appropriate level and with topics and activities my students like.

Teaching Specialty:

Writing › General

I like to use a technique called Focused Rewrites. Students write on any topic they desire. I rewrite some or all of what they wrote using correct grammar and more complexity. Our sessions focus on both the content and the changes made.

Writing › Essay Writing

Essay writing is important for many English language exams, as well as language preparation for study in an English speaking environment. Students will learn about topic sentences of paragraphs, thesis statements for essays, introductions, conclusions, and much more.

Topics › Discussion

Discussions can be based on Ted Talks from the internet, movies, books and student ideas. Students will practice presenting and responding to information, being clear about facts and opinions, and more.

Test Prep › IELTS

The best preparation here is a good textbook, although the internet can give an introduction.

Test Prep › TOEFL

I find the best resource for TOEFL Prep is using a good textbook, plus lots of practice with all the skills.

Everyday English › Free Conversation

Many students requesting free conversation have begun by answer a series of questions about a topic. The internet has several sites where teacher and student can choose topics. The next step is learning how to carry on a conversation.

Everyday English › Situational Conversation

There are so many text books available for this! Also we can choose dialogues or role plays from sources on the internet.

Topics › News Articles

I like to use news articles from the internet. Breaking News English is one of my favorite sites, as students can listen and read at different levels either as homework or during the session itself. Reading together can help with pronunciation and comprehension. Follow up questions are so interesting!
