Introduction:

My style is flexible to help meet the needs of each student to help them improve at their own pace.

Hello! My name is Kristen and I am an American English teacher from Michigan. I have my Associates degree in American Sign Language Interpreting and I will be receiving my Bachelors degree this summer with a minor in Professional Communications. I will be taking a teaching English as a foreign language class this winter so that I will have my TEFL certificate by this summer as well. Two of my passions are learning new languages and helping other people to learn. I am a native English speaker who is fluent in American Sign language with some knowledge of Spanish, Greek, and Korean languages. I have been a tutor to elementary and high school students since my first year in high school. Now I am a nanny to four children of different ages that I help teach and assist with their school work. Next fall I will be traveling to Greece and Thailand to learn about their languages and cultures before moving to South Korea for a few years to tech English. I hope that through our language exchange, we can both learn about each other's cultures while your English improves.

Teaching Specialty:

Everyday English › Free Conversation

A free conversation gives you the ability to pick any topic that you would like to talk about. During free talk we can also focus on different parts of English speech that you would like to focus on.

English Basics › Pronunciation / Phonics

Pronunciation can be difficult when the language you are learning is very different from your own. The way that I like to work on pronunciation is by reading simple pieces of text so that I do not have to think about what I am saying while focusing on my mouth shapes. We can work on your pronunciation in the same way.

Everyday English › Situational Conversation

Being a language learner and traveler myself, I know how important it can be to know how to communicate in various situations. We can pick a situation like a restaurant, a grocery store, the movies, a shopping mall, or any other situation you would like to know more about. We can run through what a conversation in that situation might sound like and go over important vocabulary and phrases to study.

Topics › Discussion

Discussions on specific topics are a great way to build specialized vocabulary and become comfortable talking about that topic. We can choose a topic like an article, a movie, travel, food, music... after our conversation I can break down the specialized vocabulary we used.
