💬 Improve your Listening, Comprehension, Public Speaking & Writing skills with me!
Hello! 👋 I'm Madelyn. I live in Wales, in the UK. I am a native British English speaker with a neutral accent.
I enjoy long-distance running 🏃🏻♀️ (I completed my first marathon in 2019!), taking walks on the beach 🌊 swimming in the sea 🏊🏻♀️ and spending time with friends and family over cups of tea ☕
I enjoy cooking healthy meals and snacks and I dabble in painting with watercolours 🎨
I'm a naturally very positive and enthusiastic person 🌞 and I always strive to look for the best in any situation.
I'm aware that we all absorb new things in different ways and at different speeds so if we need to change tack during a class, that's just fine!
There's no need to be nervous.
We're on the same team; I am here to help YOU get better 😊
I am an experienced public speaker 👩🏻🏫 with lots of tips to help you be the best version of yourself when giving presentations or demonstrations 👏🏻 (getting your nerves under control, how to make the best use of notes, dealing with interruptions, etc.).
I've been involved in one-to-one teaching for over 10 years and I'm also enrolled in a public speaking school which helps to keep me up-to-date with the latest methods of teaching and speaking. I attend these public speaking classes every week and they help me stay fresh and practiced. Every 5 years I attend an intense week-long refresher class.
I've taught a varied range of students from all over the world 🌏 I find it very fulfilling work and I really love to listen 👂🏻 and get to know my students 😄
My teaching style is very interactive; I make sure to involve you in our discussion right away - this is really important as this is the secret to learning a language: practice! 🤓 💬
I feel culture is also very important; understanding the target languages' history and background is a massive stepping stone to understanding the language itself. Incorporating different facets of British culture is an accessible way to help you see the importance of learning the English language and learning to speak it like a native! 👍🏻
English idioms and phrases are a fascinating way to gain an insight into the language and I love looking into their origins and history. Comparing the differences between American English and British English is also something that is fun and useful to many students and is a subject I love to discuss.
So let's get going - book a lesson 📅 and we can start your journey together today! 😎
Ask me about my lesson: 🎧 Listening & Comprehension 💭 Many students find listening to be the most challenging part of a conversation. In these lessons, you'll be sent a podcast recording link to listen to before class. During class, we'll listen again to the podcast (or an except) together and I will ask some prepared comprehension questions based on what we just listened to. You will have plenty of opportunities to ask me questions about unfamiliar vocabulary, phrases, and content context during class. This has proved to be a really successful way for many of my students to improve their listening skills. Some of the resources I use include the Global News by the BBC World Service and the Scientific American Podcast: 60-Second Podcasts series.
Ask me about my lesson: 🤝🏻 Practical English - How are you? 🤝🏻 Learn different question forms for the basic: How are you? And learn some different replies to this important question! 🎓 This lesson will really help you to become more confident and sound more like a native English speaker 😎 You will be sent a worksheet after class to keep for your English learning file.
👨🏻🏫👩🏻🏫 Public speaking tips that can really help you with your business presentations and meetings. I am an experienced public speaker with lots of tips (and worksheets for your learning file!) to help you be the best version of yourself when giving presentations or demonstrations. For example, I can help you with getting your nerves under control, making an outline, making the best use of notes, dealing with interruptions, etc.
Ask me about my lesson: 💬 The Art of Free Conversation & Pronunciation Practice Many of my students find informal small talk, or "chit-chat" to be the most challenging when learning a new language, so you're not alone. That being said, small talk can be mastered! Along with conversation practice, learn the differences between British English and American English words - a fun and interesting exercise that will help you in your travels, business meetings, and social occasions!
