Hi, my name is Ellen.
My fascination with languages and cultures blossomed during my first international experience as an exchange student in Costa Rica. The people and life in Central America were so different from my childhood on a family farm in Ohio. This exchange experience also introduced me to my first experience of culture shock. Following my year abroad, I completed my degree in Communications and then earned my teaching certificate, which enabled me to teach Spanish and English in Ohio high schools for 27 years. During those years, I also traveled a bit and continued my education at 6 different universities. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue expanding my understanding of our world through podcasts and online courses.
I continue teaching today but now my focus is on adult one-on-one English lessons (A1 - C1) with a bit more time dedicated to Business English (B1 - C1) including job interview and presentation practice.
Each client has their own unique combination of skills and challenges as well as mindset and learning styles. I look forward to an opportunity to get to know you and your individual circumstances better. Together, we can find the best path to help you achieve your language goals.

Case studies are an excellent tool for learning on multiple levels. First, we can gain understanding from the analyses, decisions, and outcomes provided in real-world business scenarios. Additionally, we can expand and practice our vocabulary and structures as we summarize and debate all elements of the case study.
Making presentations can be nerve-wracking. Preparation and practice can go a long way to help overcome nervousness. There is a range of challenges we can work together to address. Whether that is how to make extensive use of numbers, percentages, and data trends more understandable and engaging or maybe you are tasked with reducing and simplifying highly technical reports or perhaps you just need to polish your delivery – together we can prepare, improve, and practice your successful presentation.
Grammar English grammar can definitely be challenging. Just let me know what your personal challenge or doubt is and we will work together to overcome it. That includes understanding how different types of conversations rely on different structures. Working in sales or while negotiating will include the use of conditional structures while present perfect is used much more during standups and status reports. Unfortunately, there aren’t always clear consistent usage rules, with prepositions for example. For those instances, I can provide additional online practice to polish your skills at your own convenience.
