Speak More Naturally in American English | No Scripts | B1+ | 14+ Yrs
Hey, I'm Matthew. Native English speaker from the United States, based in Cebu, Philippines for over 17 years. I've taught English to students from around the world and spent nearly 10 years working one-on-one with Japanese professionals at a digital marketing firm.
🎯 Who I work best with:
Students at B1 (pre-intermediate) and above - adults and older kids/teens who can already hold a basic conversation but want to sound more natural, idiomatic, and confident.
Note: I don't teach absolute beginners (A1/A2) or follow a syllabus. If you're brand new to English, a structured, syllabus-based tutor will serve you better.
I've been around non-native speakers every single day for 17 years, and I know exactly where people get stuck. It's almost never grammar. It's comfort: blanking out, overthinking, stopping mid-sentence because you're bracing for a correction. I get it.
I'm a dad of three (two on the autism spectrum), and that shapes how I show up: patience, clarity, meeting people where they are. No judgment, no rushing. Faith is important to me, and if it's something you'd like to talk about, I'm happy to.
🌏 Where I come from:
I grew up in the Rocky Mountains (Colorado and Wyoming). I miss the pine trees, the buffalo in Yellowstone, and the crisp air of spring and autumn. But I'll trade that for swimming year-round and eating mango, dragonfruit, and pineapple whenever I want. I'd love to finally see the aurora, and even though I'm not a cold person, I still enjoy skiing (31 years since I last went - the legs remember) and snowmobiling.
🌱 Things I'm still chasing:
I have a PADI Open Water license and have never actually scuba dived - 17 years in the Philippines and I still haven't done it. I'd love to try skydiving. I didn't enjoy fishing as a kid, but now that I have kids I want to take them, and we've done it once (Bohol, South Farm in Panglao - also my wife's first time). Next up: ocean fishing. I'm also into gardening and would love to have a small farm someday.
💛 When I'm not talking with students:
I'm out in nature (camping, beach, swimming), building LEGO MOCs, watching Bluey with my kids, or listening to classical music and traditional string instruments like the Erhu and Koto. From my Filipina wife's tamales to Japanese curry to schnitzel and spätzel to pizza on a Saturday night, I still think the best conversations happen over a shared meal. (And yes, I prefer waffles. They're just better, especially with maple syrup.)
Countries I've taught: Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, Mongolia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Russia, Germany, Poland, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Yemen, Oman, Somalia, Chad, Mexico.
Book a trial and we'll just talk. No test, no assessment, no prep. We find out if we click.
先生の得意分野:
I'm from the United States and I've been teaching American English for over a decade. I help you sound natural in everyday American English - the phrases and expressions you actually hear in real life, not the stiff textbook version. Happy to mix in a bit of British or Australian flavor if you want. My background: Adways (Philippines), Inc. (~10 yrs) English Language Department Manager. Taught English to Japanese professionals at a digital marketing firm. Focused on conversation, everyday English, and building speaking confidence. EV Language Center & 3D Universal English Institute (4 yrs) Native English Speaker Teacher. Conversational English, pronunciation, and American English for students from 25 nationalities. Cebu Home & Builders Centre (2 years) Trained 300+ Filipino coworkers in customer retention and service. Taught them how to use English effectively when interacting with international customers - not a classroom, but real teaching in a real work environment.
This is the broadest way to describe what I do, and honestly the most accurate. I teach English by talking. No curriculum, no level-based progression, no "this week we're doing past perfect." You bring the topic, I keep it going, and English happens naturally because we're actually having a conversation. If you've ever felt like English lessons are too structured, too scripted, or too "serious" for what you actually need, this is the opposite of that.
This is basically everything I do. We talk about whatever you want: your day, your work, your hobbies, a problem you're working through, a topic you're curious about. I keep the conversation going with natural follow-ups so you're never left hanging in silence. I'll drop in a quick correction or a more natural way to say something if it helps - the way a friend would, not a teacher marking a paper. For example: "You said 'we goes' - you mean 'we went'?" Done. No grammar lesson after. What this looks like in practice: • We talk. A lot. About things that matter to you. • I listen more than I talk. • Corrections are gentle, in the moment, and only when they actually help. • No prep between lessons. Just show up and talk. No one-size-fits-all. No robotic drills. Just a conversation that happens to make you better at English. Works best for B1 and above. No one-size-fits-all. No robotic drills. Just a conversation that happens to make you better at English.
