INTRODUCTION:
Hello! Let me introduce myself.
My name is Mac White. For the past 3 years, I’ve been an English teacher on SkimaTalk, where I focus on teaching everyday spoken English (日常英会話). Before that, I spent 26 years teaching English online to Japanese students exclusively. Why only Japanese students? Because I can speak and read Japanese.
After high school, I studied Japanese in Japan with private tutors. When I returned to my university in Utah, I completed a 4-year degree in Japanese. Later, I earned a graduate degree in international marketing. For 13 years, I worked at a research company in Japan, where many of our clients were Japanese businesses. I spent several hours each day speaking Japanese.
26 years ago, I decided to change careers and become an online English teacher specializing in teaching Japanese students.
In Japan, most English classes focus on grammar and writing rather than everyday conversation. As a result, many Japanese professionals can read and write English well but struggle with speaking and understanding it.
To help my students improve their spoken English, I often use a Japanese-English conversation textbook. I read a sentence in Japanese, and the student translates it into English. For advanced students who are fluent in speaking, I teach English idioms, phrases, and sometimes slang. We also discuss current topics, such as possible trade issues under the new presidency.

Even in the Business departments of Japanese universities business English education empathizes grammar and written English, not spoken conversational business English. As a consequence, Japanese business people are quite good at reading and writing business English but lack the skills in speaking business English. Before Japanese business people can become good In spoken business English they must have skills in the basic spoken conversational English. Now, the good news is that there are so many very good textbooks for business conversational English in book stores in Japan.
We could tackle topic related to your business or any topic you would like to talk. We also could focus on learning idioms and slang in order to understand news, watch movies, communicate properly and etc.
I can provide lessons from Basic to Advance levels of English from grammar, speech, phonics, slangs, idioms or any other English topics.

From 1966 to 1996, I worked in Japan as a business consultant for 13 years. After my time in Japan, I continued consulting in Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico, the Middle East, and the U.S., mainly with Japanese companies. Since 1996, I’ve been self-employed as an education professional, teaching English both online and in person for over 25 years. During this time, I’ve taught more than 90,000 lessons. I spent 13 years in Japan, using Japanese in my work as a researcher. For the past 3 years, I’ve been teaching English on SkimaTalk.
