I specialise in conversational English; helping to improve confidence, fluency and accuracy
My name is Joma and I have been teaching for 6 years. I studied English at University and went on to get both a CELTA qualification and a PGCE before becoming a full time teacher. I grew up travelling, and I have continued to travel as a teacher, working in China, Italy, Japan and the UK. I am passionate about the English Language and, as well as teaching, I am also a published author.
I have many teaching resources that focus on pronunciation. Often students are afraid to communicate because they lack confidence in their pronunciation and I have developed lesson plans to tackle these issues.
Having taught students of all ages and abilities, from all over the world, I have developed a knack for teaching general English for every day use. I understand how important it is for students to be able to use the language in its most useful form.
A lot of my work has had a focus on conversational English and as a teacher in Japan my lessons were specially designed to introduce new conversational concepts to my students, help them internalise those concepts, and encourage them to use what they had learned in free and fluent conversation by the lesson's end. I bring these expertise to my online teaching.

As part of my SCITT course, I completed practical work at Stoke Hill Infants School (two terms) and St Sidwell’s Primary School (one term). At Stoke Hill, I trained as a teacher in a year 2 class. During my first term, I shared the work load with two class teachers. As my training and my skills as a teacher progressed, so did my responsibility and, during my second term, I was in charge of around 80 to 100 per cent of all planning and teaching. I also guided my year group through some of their SATs and became more familiar with this testing. At St Sidwell’s, I was in charge of a year 4 class. I did the majority of the planning and teaching and developed my skills in teaching foundation subjects.
I taught various classes of all age groups, from children of 6 to adults. My classes consisted of one-to-ones and group work and I worked in fluency and in exam preparation. I did one-to-one teaching with soldiers in the Italian Military. I planned my lessons according to the groups and the individuals I was teaching, tailoring each lesson to the students’ wants and needs.
I was a member of the summer school teaching staff, working with young learners - children from 9 to 19 years old - of mixed nationalities. I worked mainly with Intermediate and Pre-Intermediate groups, but covered some Upper-intermediate and lower level classes also. My lessons were three hours long and focused on both receptive and productive skills through numerous activities that cater for multiple learner types. There was an intake of new students each week so the class dynamic was constantly changing, which required frequent adaptations of my teaching style.
I was a conversational English teacher at several different universities in Tokyo. My objective was to ensure that students acquired adequate language skills to complement their professional skills and advance their careers as well as giving them the chance to meet new people and learn more about different cultures.
