About Me:
Hello! I am Sophia, and I am from the state of Florida in the US. I have a passion for traveling, exploring different cultures, and learning about people. Teaching lets me do all three! In the past, I have lived and taught English in Taiwan and South Korea. Now, I live in Spain. I have a master's degree in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. I have many hobbies and some of them are painting, singing, playing guitar, baking, and skateboarding. I also enjoy watching Netflix, going to the beach, and reading in the park.
Me as a Teacher:
I began teaching 10 years ago. I have taught English as a second language in the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, and online. I have a bachelor’s degree in education, a TEFL certificate, and TESOL certificate for teaching online learners. I have the professional knowledge and experience to help students meet their language goals. My students describe me as patient and encouraging. I am a language learner as well as a language teacher, so I understand what students need to be successful.
My Lessons & Teaching Style:
In the classroom, my lessons are student-centered. In our first class, we will get to know each other. I will hear from you what you want to focus on and assess your skills. Then, I will provide feedback specific to your needs and abilities. I use task-based learning and role-play to practice speaking in real-life situations. We will talk about you, your interests, and current events to build vocabulary. In each lesson, we will practice pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension. I will provide materials such as vocabulary lists, grammar practice, and reading comprehension texts. I encourage student output and want my students to feel confident communicating in English. Teaching Specialty:
We will use TOEFL practice tests to prepare you for your exam. I will teach you test-taking skills in English, and ways to improve your listening and reading comprehension. You will learn how to answer questions in the speaking portion of the exam and practice answering questions with confidence, proper grammar, and clear pronunciation. We will also do writing practice. You will ace your test!
We will adjust the lesson to your writing goals. I will teach you both formal and informal writing. We will learn the correct styles to use for essays, work emails, text messages, and any other writing you need to do in English.
Public speaking doesn't have to be scary! I will teach you how to speak with confidence and fluency. You can use these skills when giving a presentation at work, or at school.
Interviews can be nerve-wracking in any language! We will do interview practice with role-play and practice responding in a natural way. I will teach you how to answer questions clearly and how to keep your answers interesting. You will ace any interview you have!
We will relax and chat about you and other topics of interest. You will develop confidence in speaking and build listening comprehension skills during our conversations. We will focus on smooth and natural speech and learn other aspects (grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary) as needed to keep the conversation flowing.
We will learn vocabulary that you can use immediately in your everyday life. I will teach you phrases that will help you sound like a native English speaker.
I will help you improve your pronunciation. You will learn how to shape your mouth and lips, and where to put your tongue to create the correct sounds. You will be speaking natural and clear English!
I will teach you proper syntax and you will understand how to create grammatically correct sentences in English.
