Building rapport, making students feel comfortable and willing to talk. Detailed error correction.
Hi, my name is James or Jim, for short. Originally, I'm from England in the UK, but now live in Baguio city, Philippines. I have over seven years of teaching experience, six years of face to face experience in China and over an entire year of online experience too. I have worked with Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Spanish students. I am a qualified ESL teacher, having completed my teacher training in Barcelona, back in 2002. Prior to teaching, my corporate background was in financial services and marketing. I am, therefore, able to help those students, who want to learn English for business purposes. I think "free conversation" classes are my forte. I'm a creative, engaging and spontaneous conversationalist with a typically dry British sense of humor. I don't pretend to be anything other than myself. I definitely don't try to copy any other teacher's technique. I just do what comes naturally to me. I try to create an atmosphere and environment that makes students feel comfortable and happy to talk. I prefer not to interrupt students when they talk, but rather wait until they have finished speaking and then point out their mistakes, either verbally or in writing, after the session. I understand that you guys have an extensive choice of different teachers and I also appreciate that not every student will find my style of teaching suitable. If you book a session with me and discover that we don't really "connect" that's fine. No hard feelings. On the other hand, I'm sure there will be some of you, who will connect with me - in which case, I will do everything I reasonably can to take your English up to the next level. Finally, I would like to say something about TOEFL. I have strong opinions about this. I passionately believe that as a student, everything that you learn in the classroom, be it an actual physical classroom or a virtual one, should have a practical application. In real life, how often does someone fire quick questions at you and only offer 45 seconds to respond? If you book a TOEFL preparation session with me, from a purely professional perspective, I will do my best to try to help you. In all honesty, though, I hate TOEFL. The format of the TOEFL speaking test is completely stupid and utterly unrealistic. I am more familiar with IELTS and my forte is free conversation. I would suggest choosing one of the many other teachers for TOEFL preparation. Thanks for reading! Jim.
I use a variety of teaching material from different sources, in particular www.breakingnewsenglish.com and www.linguahouse.com - I am quite capable, however, of conducting genuinely free spontaneous conversations without the need for any pre-prepared material.
